Elmhurst Outpatient Surgery Center (EOSC) is a state-of-the-art, JCAHO accredited ASC, located on the Elmhurst Memorial Center for Health campus. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Registered Nurse - Operating Room
Two Positions
32 Hours - 8:30 am - 5:00 pm - 4 days/week
36 hours 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

No weekends/holidays/call

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse in the OR is responsible for the intra-operative assessment, plan, care and safety of the patient as well as assisting all members of the surgical team including the anesthesia provider.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Adheres to EOSC safety initiatives. Recognizes and reports observed or suspected safety violations, hazards and non-compliance with EOSC’s policies and procedures and initiates corrective action and preventive measures as appropriate.
  • Attends to the physical, safety and emotional needs of the patient while in the preoperative setting. Completes Time Out Process and Safety Checks as required.
  • Prepares the OR by assuring correct supplies/equipment is available including implants, films, medication and positioning aides. Organizes activities and utilizes time efficiently.
  • Anticipates and responds to changes in the OR; available to assist surgical team as necessary. Maintains and monitors the sterile environment. Assists with room turnovers including cleaning and mopping in preparation for subsequent procedures.
  • Comprehends function of equipment, can troubleshoot when needed. Competent to function efficiently in multiple services. Handles specimens safely and processes according to protocol.
  • Documents patient records and other forms accurately. Assists in inventory activities including physical count, supply documentation and preference card updates/corrections.
  • Assists with instrument reprocessing, has working knowledge of sterilizers. Obtains supplies for cases, identifies missing supplies in advance of scheduled procedure. Communicates to appropriate personnel if inventory is insufficient.
  • Reads and responds to company email in a timely manner. Email must be checked at least weekly, or as defined in the Employee Handbook, either on-site or remotely through the EOSC website.
  • Participates in performance improvement and quality initiatives. Assists with gathering quality data, completing audits, participating on
    committees, etc.
  • Complies with all EOSC policies/procedures, Joint Commission, IDPH, CMS and other regulatory agencies’ standards and guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years experience working in the operating room. Previous experience in ENT, working in both scrub and circulating roles and working in an ASC setting preferred.
  • Possess and maintain an unrestricted Registered Nurse License in the State of Illinois.
  • BLS Certification required.
  • Physical requirements:
    • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, bending or walking and repetitive use of hands
    • May be required to push/pull carts, wheelchairs and OR/PACU equipment
    • May be required to lift/carry up to 50 lbs
    • May be required to wear lead aprons weighing in excess of
      10-12 lbs
  • Employees are at risk for occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) and must comply with the procedures and work practices outlined in EOSC’s policies and procedures including the use of all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) and engineering controls (e.g., sharps containers, labels, and red bags) per regulatory standards.
  • Required to handle cleaning agents including disinfectants, enzymatic solutions and chemical sterilants and must comply with the procedures and work practices outlined in EOSC’s policies and procedures including the use of all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Able to work independently, manage multiple priorities at once, and work within aggressive timelines. Must be able to work in fast-paced, multi-specialty environment. Must be team oriented and remain flexible with job performance, daily assignments, scheduled hours and meeting the needs of the department.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Well organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact with people at all levels including patients, nursing staff, technicians, business office staff, other managers, physicians, executive management, etc.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
