Preparing for Surgery
![]() |
Your physician will discuss your surgery with you during your office visit and will explain the risks, benefits, and alternatives involved with your particular procedure. After the decision for surgery has been made, your physician will work with EOSC to schedule a date and time for your procedure. Approximately one week prior to your procedure, you will receive a phone call from a member of EOSC’s nursing staff to obtain your health history and to review your pre-operative instructions. |
Our nursing staff will give you an estimated time to arrive at EOSC on the day of surgery. Your exact arrival time will be confirmed the day before surgery. It is very important that you provide us with the most accurate and complete information possible. This will assist our staff in providing you with the best possible care. Information requested from you will include:
- Your medical history including all other surgeries and experiences
with anesthesia - Allergies to medications
- General health information
- Recent illness including fever, colds or rash
- Current prescriptions, over the counter medications, and herbal supplements, including dosages and frequency of use
- Use of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs
- Pregnancy
- Chronic medical problems including diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea
- Durable power of attorney, living will or advanced medical directives
You may be required to have specific tests performed prior to your surgery. It is important that these tests are completed timely and that the results are faxed to our facility prior to your arrival.
Testing can be completed at the Elmhurst Memorial Center for Health, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, or at any facility your physician recommends or any site as determined by your insurance. Test results and a copy of your history and physical should be faxed to 630/758.8806, Attn: Pre-op Nursing.
In addition to providing us with a complete health history and test results, it is important that your follow these important instructions prior to surgery.
Failure to follow theses instructions may lead to a delay or cancellation of your procedure:
- Please make arrangements to have someone drive you home after your surgery. Taxi transportation is allowed only for those patients accompanied by an adult escort. If the person responsible for driving you home after surgery is not present with you when you arrive at EOSC, we will contact that person upon your arrival to confirm your transportation arrangements. If you have concerns regarding transportation, please consult with your surgeon. There may be some cases where this guideline may be waived by your surgeon, however, he/she must provide advanced written notice to EOSC of his/her request.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night prior to your surgery unless otherwise instructed by our pre-operative nurse. This includes all foods, liquids, water, candy, gum and breath mints.
- At minimum, do not smoke or use any tobacco products after midnight prior to surgery. Your surgeon may instruct you to abstain for a longer period of time. Please defer to your surgeon’s instructions.
- Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before or after your surgery.
- If you take insulin or any other routine medication, our pre-operative nurse will tell you how to take your medication the day of surgery.
- If you take a blood thinner such as Coumadin or aspirin, or currently take Plavix or another medication for blood clots, please tell your surgeon at least 10 days prior to your surgery date. Your surgeon will provide you with further instructions.
- You may take your normal heart, blood pressure, breathing or seizure medication the morning of surgery with a sip of water, unless otherwise instructed by our pre-operative nurse.
Lastly, you will receive a follow-up phone call from our nursing staff the day prior to surgery to confirm your time of arrival, review any special instructions and remind you of what important information you should bring with you for your procedure. Confirmation calls are made between 1pm and 4pm the day prior to your scheduled procedure. If you do not receive a confirmation phone call, you may call EOSC directly at 630.758.8800.
